Online Pet Pharmacies

With more reports in the news of counterfeit anti-parasite products leading to pet deaths, I thought it would be a good time to discuss getting some of your pet’s products through the mail, at discount store chains, or places other than your veterinarian’s office.

As veterinary professionals, we often hear of how we are just trying to get more money when we recommend products and how place “x” is WAY cheaper.

First off, I am sure, as in any profession, there are the rare few veterinarians out there lacking in ethical framework and only seeing the dollar-signs, but overall, as veterinarians, we really do just want what is best for your pet. Our primary goal and reason for being in this profession is to provide excellent health care and compassion for animals and their people.

The reasons we want you to buy your pet’s medications and products from us:

  • They are strictly regulated so we know they are absolutely as safe as they can be for you beloved pet.
  • They come directly from the manufacturer so we know exactly where they came from and how they were handled.
  • Because they are regulated by the government, by the manufacturer, and then by us, in the rare instance that there is a reaction/etc, it can be documented, addressed, & efforts made in a timely fashion to prevent future episodes
  • The products are usually 100% guaranteed by the manufacturer. This is NOT the case when you purchase from any outside source (even if they say they are “guaranteed”, they aren’t – you must read the fine print).
  • Because we know your pet and their medical history, we can ensure that they are receiving the proper medications at the proper dosages.

In addition, many of the products now sold ‘over the counter’ (like Hartz, etc) are older, outdated products. Many of these products we used to use regularly, but we now have much safer, more efficacious products available. I have seen a cat die from someone buying a product at a major retailer and thinking they could use it on all of their pets to save a $$. In fact, it was one of the pesticides available that kills cats – and unfortunately it did :'{.

At Companion Animal Hospital, we have always been amenable to providing prescriptions to be filled by other sources, but we do want our clients to be aware of the risks that may be involved.

We encourage you to visit some of the following sites from the FDA, EPA, & AVMA that discuss the regulations and cautionary warnings when getting medications other places than from your veterinarian.

I can say with confidence, we truly do not just want your money. We make medical recommendations based in science and physiology to provide the best health care for your pets to ensure they live the longest, happiest, and healthiest lives possible.

As always, if you have ANY questions regarding the health and well-being of your pet, please do not hesitate to give us a call!
